Annie Besant once said, "no philosophy, no religion, has ever brought so glad a message to the world as this good news of Atheism". Its been 85 years since she left this world and her dream is yet to come true. This makes me wonder, why is an abstract concept of religion synonymous with an individual's pride, when its just a belief, not an achievement. when it should have been a reason to unite a group of people with a common belief, why has it reduced to being a source of conflict.
By constitution, you have the right to chose any religion, even though we barely get a real choice. Our birth decides which deity we are supposed to worship all our life. Its not like we get to go through a few packages and choose the one that matches our postulation . At birth, by default, our parents decide this aspect of our life, something that they didn't get to decide for themselves either.
Agreed, its one less decision to worry about, but one more burden to carry around too . Burden of not only fulfilling the terms and conditions of the unwanted contract that you ended up signing at your birth but also the burden of expectation to pass it on to your successor. The question here is why would any parent want his or her kids to chose the same path, which they know is filled with inconveniences and an illogical pile of procedures.
Though I want to be a feminist and support the supreme court's judgement regarding the Sabarimala temple, I can see why there's so much hue and cry about it . Its never been easy to change a religious belief no matter how inconvenient or ridiculous it might look. Religion is a matter of choice. If you choose to be a part of it, you better follow all their terms. If its not your type, stay away. No ones forcing you to opt it, except your family, of course. But chosing a religious group to be a part of it and then question their age old terms and conditions sounds very unfair to me. Should have thought about it when you signed up for it. Period.
Some of these religious procedures may have actual scientific and good health reasons but over the generations, that reason hasn't been conveyed properly and so it lost its true meaning and yet generation after generation have been fulfilling them mechanically without questioning. They also expect their next Gen to adopt their belief and the highly inconvenient gruntwork , as it is. No questions asked, would be even more convenient!!! Highly recommended, if you don't want to annoy the elders of the family. Don't ask the questions, they don't know answers to. "Don't act smart", is what they want you to know at all times. So, remember to act dumb. You weren't raised to be a smart, independent and cultured human. You were raised to be smart to try not to review or renew anything that feels ridiculous, independent to mind your own business, cultured to be nice and socialise only with the people who worship the same deity.
Love and respect is not hard to give when you share a bloodline but questioning a belief system can raise hell in any peaceful home. Sad, but who can remind the furious ones that, a simple solution to save grace and dignity is to "let go"and "let be".
#ATHEISM is the only solution!!

good one ..liked it..not choosing any religion in this world also should be an option to the persons like me
ReplyDeleteI love your opinion and observation. However, atheism is NOT the solution. The meaning of religion has changed a lot since inception of each sect. Religion was a ‘Constitution’ in earlier days, a way of living life. Probably the only solution is not doing what the previous generation did, I.e passing the burden. Teaching the next gen to learn one’s own religion and respecting other’s is the only solution.
ReplyDeleteNot to forget, Sabarimala was never about Gender inequality. I think Feminism is not saying I want to enter the temple, feminism is also respecting a collective sentiment of people of that particular region. It’s more than feminism , it’s a humane sensitivity.
True, religion used to be a way of life. A way to keep peace and spread love. Sadly, it doesn't serve the purpose anymore. Thanks a lot for your insight, Viji.
