Tina, Aditi and more
After one hour of fun filled episode of Koffee with Karan, every one seem to be stuck at Twinkle’s Cr**ch remark and happily chose to ignore the fact , how witty, funny and graceful she had been through the whole hour. For me, she seemed like a person who is very comfortable with herself and confident about her opinions and ideologies. She is definitely a woman who thinks out of the box (box as in, a regular indian mind is expected to think), doesn't care to be diplomatic or filter her thoughts to the extreme that she is liked by all . She is bold enough to be just herself and admit (not confess) that she just wanted to have a fling with the man (who is her husband now), initially.
If a similar line was used in a standup comedy by a man, the audience would have burst out in laughter for a non-stop-minute atleast. Not to mention , 99% of standup comedians cant survive in front of the mic without a least of half a dozen sexist jokes. But if a female comedian is standing in front of the same crowd making fun of how over-friendly sardarjis can be to help out a lonely damsel on delhi streets or about her dreadful tinder experiences, more than half of the men in audience would look more shocked and much less entertained. No wonder why there are very few female standup comedians in India compared to the west. Aditi mittal seems to be the only lady who managed to taste success in this male dominated field. Other extremely witty women in the field like Radhika Vaz, Neeti palta and Aparna Nancherla decided to move backstage and write scripts for comedy movies and shows . Some even made failed attempts at acting in comic roles too, courtesy of violently boisterous physical slapstick comedy thats prevalent in Indian movies.
Another very successful but sadly very overrated female standup comedian is Bharti Singh. I guess she is the only lady of this country who is happy about being over-weight and made the most of it, to make her career. I wish she could think a little more with the 100g brain and act a little less with the remaining100kg of herself.
Kapil sharma is another overrated comedian on Indian Television. Hitting on every actress who comes to his show to promote her upcoming movie and insulting his own audience, are his USP.
Coming back to Twinkle Khanna Kumar aka Tina , she writes a very successful and witty blog for the times of india, fortnightly and has two books to her credit already. Her second, the legend of Lakshmi prasad, is only a week old. I will let you all know if the book is worth your time as soon as I finish reading it . Meanwhile, I would highly recommend Chetan Bhagat’s latest novel, one indian girl. A good weekend read. Signing off for now.
I agree man..oops Girl!!!
ReplyDeleteWe still need to grow out out our conventional thinking when it comes to a woman speaking without any kind of obligations. I would however disagree on the idea that Bharti is overrated. I think she made best out of her personality. Afterall, who can laugh at themselves and at the same time let others have a good laugh. End of the day she's a a woman competing the men in where men are considered best. Yes, she has lost the charm, but hey, she was a ordinary girl who s a celebrity now.
Speaking about Twinkle Khanna, I really haven't followed her much, but I would definitely watch Koffee with Karan after reading this. She has authored quite a number of books, which I intend to read(atleast 1).
I must add, Love your style of writing Radha. You seem to have the right mix of pen and opinion.
ReplyDeleteHey sis, This has long been overdue and finally caught up with it today. You are using the right mix of words to keep reader engaged. We may agree or disagree with your views but you are honest with it and not going by populism. Keep writing and keep folks like me enthralled.
